Actionscript 3.0, printJob and a black page!

Talk about figuring out something the hard way, I had to add print functionality to a flash advent calendar and upon testing in a browser began printing pages that would first print what I was expecting but then added a lovely black box at the bottom of the page. I had added a white background box to the page at the beginning but after much beating my head came to realize that it just wasn’t long enough and the printer interpreted the empty space as black, I extended the white box and voila! page prints only the items I want and no more black box. I’d seen a few posts about this with no solution so hopefully this helps someone else out there beating their heads over something silly.

Fall setting in, getting re-acquainted with my computer

Since the weather has begun to grow cold and my desire to be outside grows less I’ve finally found motivation to land my butt in front of my home computer once again. Thanks to being able to attend fitc in edmonton I’m inspired to get my own stuff going at home. To start I’ve decided to rework a project I had taken over from another dev (and basically added stuff to) and am going to rebuild it with love. Also at work the devs and motion designers want to couple up and get some fun, innovative projects going in our spare time outside of work. I mean I’d love to say we do that through our client work but let’s face it, that doesn’t always happen, I think it really depends on who your clients are (looks longingly at burger king dev’s at CP&B). So hopefully in the future I can blog about how those are going, any learnings I might find or anything else interesting that might come along!

Just wanted to make a quick post about fitc edmonton this past weekend. While not on the scale of toronto I personally think being the first event in Alberta that it was a success. There was a good range of speakers from design to dev I think everyone was able to learn something new, see something inspirational and take alot away from the conference. Once again I was able to meet some new people and even run into an old friend. Props out to Grant Skinner and Shawn Pucknell for bringing some flash love to the praries!
